IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE…

Well you know. Now for you that know me I have always been a glass half full kind of guy. The reason is simple, if I was not by now I would be curled up in the fetal position with Guy in Shorts Sippy cup filled with Tequila and humming old Bee Gee songs. A dear friend from the Blue Crew actually said it best “your life is starting to sound like a county music song!”.   That is one of the main reasons I love FOOTBALL.

You see, FOOTBALL is a game that has all the things a growing boy needs to survive. Every play promises something unknown and exciting. Case in point, this last Sunday and the Colts-Jags game. Now don’t get me wrong, I think Jack Del Rio is the biggest TOOL in Pro sports since Ron Artest played for the Pacers. That’s not fair; Del Rio is a POWER TOOL. The man vaulted himself to number one over Bel-a-Cheat with just ONE smirk on the sideline. Let’s face it folks, every coach is TERRIFIED of Peyton Manning. Most have said as much. But with every FREE play he got via the referees, the man got crazier. While our boys in blue controlled the ball and played with a purpose, Del Rio began to look like one of those mad scientists from a B movie I saw once at the Drive In. The good news is he got exactly what was coming to him and the monster was never allowed to live.

This season has given me a lot a ‘what the %$#% ‘moments. I am not just talking about our team, but the entire NFL in general. Let’s start with something I noticed weeks back and now even Bill Polian is talking about it. The number of HELMETS that are on the ground with a head NOT in them after a play! I have played and watched a LOT of football in my life, but this problem is REALLY starting to freak me out. With the huge number of BIG hits I have been holding my breath waiting for that BIG HIT to be on a guy whose helmet just flew off his head. That my friends would make the hit Austin took during Sunday’s game look like a love tap.

I have also taken a good long look at the kick return game. Over the last few years the NFL has tried to make this more exciting. Let’s look at some of the changes. First they have to use a new and special ball for kicking. Next they only allow a two man ‘wedge’ . Then there is my all time favorite new call, hands in the back. Let’s face it folks this may be great for Devin Hester, but I swear the back judge probably has his flag in his hand ever kickoff just waiting to throw it. Now don’t get me wrong, I do not want anybody getting hurt with a chop block or a clip (when was the last time you heard THAT call) but its killing the game.

Last, but certainly not least, is the volume of injuries. Now granted our COLTS have had more than their fair share. But across the league the bodies have been piling up like a Chuck Norris movie. At this rate the NFL is going to need a minor league version of itself just so they can bring a guy up from the farm team. Aside from Brett Farve, who is reminding me more and more of General Patton, the players are taking a beating and most may not make it long enough to even learn the system they were drafted into. With all the talk about next season, it seems to me both sides need to take a hard look at what is the root cause of all the injuries. Football is a violent sport, but now more than ever it is starting to look more like ROLLERBALL than FOOTBALL.

As for our COLTS, I could not be prouder of the way they have fought through this season to still be in the hunt. Peyton has taken a lot of grief, mostly from the man in the mirror. But when the chips are down, this TEAM fights for every yard and every first down. That my friends is why this team should be getting a lot more talk from the experts. It is also why every team from now until this season is over better be afraid, VERY AFRAID! This team is HURT and ANGRY. I saw a defense that looked a lot like the 2006 defense. If we get Addia back and Freeney and Mathis stay healthy I believe we have a real shot at going DEEP into the playoffs and on to Dallas. That is of course as long as we keep our heads and the officials do not make up any new calls they want to try out on us.
